I may have missed something in the post - but I had this issue to it was because of my firewall kicking in, I had to turn it off to complete the installation.
I asked on this mailer if anybody includes any bypass instruction in their upgrade message...I didn't get a response :-(

It's supposed to upgrade you on the current page without redirecting you to macromedia.
it's different on a mac vs. pc too, on a PC, the user clicks 'yes', the upgrade will download and the install starts. the installer then closes the current window and the browser will re-open and direct back to the page that the installer was launched from.
on a mac, the user clicks 'yes', the installer downloads, but they then have to quit the browser. once they quit the browser, the installer will upgrade them, and when the upgrade is done, it re-opens the browser, and they are redirected back to the page that started the install.

My understanding was that the express install process was supposed to open a new window to Macromedia, close the original window with the flash content, and then redirect back to the original content once the upgrade was complete. What I am seeing in the example file (http://blog.deconcept.com/swfobject/expressinstall.html) is that the original content window remains open with a message saying that you need to close that window to complete installation. This is hardly any different than the non-express install experience.
